How We Clean a CNC Machine Tool Coolant System

Most people never see what's actually involved in a proper machine tool clean. Our process below is built on hands-on experience working with Blaser and Motorex coolant systems since 2015 — this is the same procedure our technicians follow on every job, from a single machine to a full site changeover.

The Full Cleaning Process

Before We Start — Preparation and Safety

Every clean begins with lockout/tagout on the machine's electrical and pneumatic systems, spill trays and absorbent pads in place, and clear signage while work is underway. We confim the waste disposal route for the old coolant with your supplier or a licensed waste handler before a drop of fluid comes out of the machine.

Step 1 — Pre-Clean With System Cleaner

24–48 hours before the main clean, we add a system cleaner to your existing coolant at the correct dose and run it through every circuit — flood, through-tool, washdown — while the machine keeps working normally. This loosens bacterial biofilm and residue that a simple drain-and-refill would leave behind.

Step 2 — Remove the Old Coolant

We vacuum out the spent coolant for compliant disposal, then remove and inspect the filters, strainers and screens.

Step 3 — Strip Down and Clean the Tank, Pumps and Components

The machine interior is washed down (carefully avoiding the spindle and electrical panels), and the coolant tank and pumps are removed, degreased and inspected. Tramp oil skimmers and separators are cleaned, and coolant lines are checked for damage before anything goes back together.

Step 4 — Reinstall and Rinse

Once everything is clean, we reinstall the tank, pumps and filters, then run a dilute rinse solution through every circuit to purge any remaining residue — not just plain water, which doesn't fully clear a system. The first flush from each line is disposed of correctly rather than reused.

Step 5 — Inspect, Refill and Verify

Coolant concentration and pH are checked and refilled to the correct mix. We run the system, confirm even flow to every tool and nozzle, and hand over dip slide test results plus a written fluid management record — ready to show an HSE inspector on request.
